My swatch looks like crap

swatch, originally uploaded by spudd.

I was swatching for Soleil, and since it's knit mostly in the round, I swatched in the round. But at the top you have to split apart and start knitting flat, so you can have arm holes and a neck hole and such. So after I'd swatched a sufficient amount in the round, I switched to swatching flat so I could make sure it would get the same gauge. And look at it! The top part is the part that was knitted flat. It's not nearly as nice and even as the part that was knit in the round.

I *think* my problem is I'm purling too loosely, but I'm not sure. If anyone has any suggestions to make my flat-knitted area look better, please let me know!

It looks as if your stitches are twisted at the top. I would suggest trying to swatch again...

I agree with Jacquie. They're either twisted or your wrapping the yarn around the needle in the wrong direction. I used to do that. I changed the direction the yarn went around the right needle when I switched from knit to purl. But actually it wraps identically for both.

Excuse me. I misspelled a word. I meant "you're," not "your."

I know you posted this nearly a month and a half ago--but THANK YOU! The same thing is happening to me with Soleil! Can you believe I'm purling funky? What's up with that?

Now off to teach myself to purl a different way!
